Castello di Canossa

In the castle of Canossa, whose ruins stand out along the ridge facing east Rossena, on 27 January 1077 the famous meeting between Henry IV and Gregory VII, in the presence of Mailde, took place, in which the emperor obtained the absolution from papal excommunication.

Today the castle ruins are reduced to the southern walls and to the crypt of St. Apollonia church, to which was annexed a Benedictine abbey. The materials found during the excavations, including a beautiful baptismal font from the XII century with the symbols of the Evangelists, are in the small and interesting castle museum.
